Head cleaning, relapping and demagnetising
Cleaning: Request proper inspection and removal of oxide deposits from heads, capstan and guides using the appropriate approved solvents and swabs for your recorder. Avoid improvised abrasives or exposing rubber components to unsuitable cleaners.
Head relapping: This is specialist re-profiling of worn magnetic heads. A qualified technician should inspect head-gap condition, wear patterns, head material and alignment before suggesting relapping.
Demagnetising: Not every modern machine or component requires the same procedure. Incorrect demagnetiser use can damage heads or recordings. Ask a technician who knows the specific recorder and keep recorded tapes away from the demagnetiser.
